The 2022 FIFA World Cup is the 22nd running of the FIFA World Cup competition. It will take place in Qatar from 21 November to 18 December 2022. This is the first FIFA World Cup held in the Arab world and the second World Cup held entirely in Asia after the 2002 tournament in South Korea and Japan.
In this tournament, there will be 32 teams participating. The next FIFA world cup to be held in 2026 will increase to 48 teams. The 2026 tournament will be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Historically the FIFA world cup tournament was held in May, June, and July. Due to Qatar's intense summer heat, this World Cup will be held from late November to mid-December, making it the first tournament not held in May, June, or July. In addition, the tournament will play in a reduced timeframe of around 28 days.
The first match played at the tournament will be contested between Senegal and the Netherlands at Al Thumama Stadium, Doha. The final will be held at the Lusail Iconic Stadium on 18 December 2022, on Qatar National Day.
